Rolls Royce Engine Upgrade Saves Air Force $2B

Rolls Royce completed the first ground test involving its upgraded T56 jet engine for the National Oceanic Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) WP-3D aircraft, showing a reduction in fuel use of over 13 percent.

The upgraded T56, which Rolls-Royce labels the Series 3.5 upgrade,is already part of planning discussions by the U.S. Air Force for the introduction of the better engine into its fleet of C-130s. However, NOAA’s WP-3D aircraft, used for tracking hurricanes, will be the first aircraft to feature the Series 3.5 upgrade.
